Evaluation
Origins.
2 rotations (Print and Mixed
Media) at a very fast past.
I found it very hard to get myself
into the origins unit.
I think this is because usually I
like working with a story behind my work and I found it very hard to visualise
the final outcome and this made it very hard for me to get into the origins
unit. However whilst the origins unit has been going by I have come to realise
that there is no one outcome.
There’s A LOT!
I have learnt so much within
these two rotations and the freedom of experimenting has provided that
learning.
Drawing is something during the
two rotations I found especially challenging.I felt like in print the drawings
needed to look a certain way very detailed and a lot of time spent into them. It
also was using different types of black media and this was also something new as
I find myself to stick to what I’m comfortable with. Which is me and my bio pen
or pens with the amount I go through. So as you can imagine I found it hard to
adjust myself to this type of drawing.
Then when going into mixed media,
drawing was very intense because the amount of drawing we had to produce
however I think I much prefer this type of drawing im much more in my comfort
zone. I loved observing the object/objects too its full potential and the
shapes in which I was creating and instantly thinking how I could make it into
something crazily big and out there (How I usually like to work).
Within the Print Rotation I particularly
thought that the colour palette to help create a mood was really beneficial and
that once I started my samples in print that I actually started to see how a
mood created within the samples can really make a collection come together even
if the motifs which created don’t have any similarities.
However within the mixed media
rotation colour wasn’t the main focus.
With mixed media scale and
context was the main outcomes I thought and I found by just changing the scale
it can give of a very different look and even outcome. I found within mixed
media I was working in very small scale to start off with and I really didn’t find
myself liking what I was producing as I’m use to working very big scale.
However I think this was more down to time if I was to have more time on this
rotation I would look to take the shapes in which I created into a much bigger
scale. To see the final outcome I think by doing this it would change the
context in which I would like to see my work produced in.
Materials.
I always knew the type of
Material chosen to use for certain outcomes was important.
However I have learnt that the
certain weight of a material, texture, look, and colour and context in which it’s
going to put into if it’s a garment, textile furnishing or gallery piece can
make a bigger difference then I ever thought. I have only realised this from
the sampling I have taken place.
With Print the material used when
screen printing would only need to take so many pulls depending how thick the
material is and even the final outcomes even though using the same pigment dyes
and screen they create very different textures and looks. Also using different
materials such as layering paper and paint to create textures which you can’t
get by using a screen to print with. I used the croques to then upload on to Photoshop
to then digital print on to material I really prefer this way in working with material
and the outcome. With mixed media the materials was the main influence for me I
was so excited to find out what I could use by using the same drawings with
different materials to get different outcomes. Who knew simple circles could be
so diverse just by using different materials I found myself well inspired by
visual merchandising and when making the samples from laser cutting etc. I really
started to think how they could be put into this context and also how the scale
could be reduced to then apply to a garment.
I was amazed at what the 3D
printer could do and wish to work with this in the future.
In conclusion if I was to do this
origins unit again I would be much wiser in my decisions and think much more in
what materials I would use for the outcome in which I want to produce. I have
found out by doing these two rotations that as much as I learnt in print the
ways in which you can do so that I much prefer mixed media.
However I don’t think this will
stop me from taking what I have learnt from print to combine with what I do in
the future with mixed media.
These rotations have made me grow
not in just the way I will do things different if I was to It next time but how
I will work in general not just thinking straight away of a outcome thinking or
the many other possibilities.
