Week 2-Intentions

This week has been a week of fighting and having to prove what I want to do.

I have developed a real passion for working with wood, I know wood isn’t the most viewed textile material, however I want to prove and show it can be. I hope to bring the textile techniques I have learnt so far and apply them to wood. I know it will be a challenge and this was also brought up in tutorial. Over the holidays, I really enjoyed working with print after seeing the chair in Manchester Art Gallery.

Manchester Art Gallery

I would like to combine print techniques with wood which then I would see placed in an interior setting, for example furniture. I would also like the same print design, which I have applied to wood to be repeated on fabric. To pull the whole thing together and I visualise this on a piece of furniture. I really loved the idea Julie came up with of having more textile materials embedded into the wood and it being revealed through the designs in the wood.

It was also brought to my attention during my tutorial that I like to work to an outcome and that is something which is important to me. However, I believe this is going to become a problem, as I am already worrying about being experiential and just thinking of how everything will look I intend to work more freely.

I showed one of my designs I sketched and illustrated in illustrator ‘1 in 10 ’ and how I intend to work with this design. I do like how it still has the texture of wood look however I do want to try out using hole shapes.

Annabel Frearson

After a week of not knowing how to get my theme of dyslexia into my drawing work, I decided to take a trip to the Whitworth Art Gallery for more inspiration. It just so happened however that there was a talk happening from a woman called Annabel Frearson. I found the talk very confusing and it actually made me frustrated about how much I did not understand the vocabulary she was using during the talk. The academic vocab really put me off. However, I did take some information down and how she actually processes her ideas is interesting. The way she takes two books of interest, which may be talking about the same topic, or even completely different subjects it may just be the year they were made which draws her to them. She combines words together to make new words, in a way that is her little creation; she definitely thinks so. What did fascinate me was how she completely re-wrote the book of Frankenstein using Excel to make sure she wasn’t repeating any words and did not miss any. I loved the way she documented the amount of words. It looked like a database or a computer code. I really want to take this idea into drawings and then progress this into my illustrations.

Week One- Intentions

In today’s tutorial, I put forward my ideas on the more focused theme, which is dyslexia, and how I plan to link that with the theme Organic/Synthetic. I explained how I plan to work with wood and explore the different types of fabric I could experiment with. I also want to experiment more with wood and the laser cutter can provide the starting point, however with the option to use the wood workshop I can progress my designs into the context ‘interiors’ so hopefully I am aloud to use that workshop. After having my tutorial I still think I need to do more drawing work, as I do not have enough body of work to progress from and start creating samples. I also need to consider what my drawings will be of and how they will translate and connect to my themes. After doing more research on dyslexia I put forward one of my ideas for drawing, for example one half of the brain being translated through geometric and linear lines and the other half of the brain being translated through drawing more crazy and ‘a bit all over the place’.

What Is Dyslexia? (British Dyslexia Association)

  • The word 'dyslexia' comes from the Greek and means 'difficulty with words'.
  • It is a life long, usually genetic, inherited condition and affects around 10% of the population.
  • Dyslexia occurs in people of all races, backgrounds and abilities, and varies from person to person: no two people will have the same set of strengths and weaknesses.
  • Dyslexia occurs independently of intelligence.
  • Dyslexia is really about information processing: dyslexic people may have difficulty processing and remembering information they see and hear. This can affect learning and the acquisition of literacy skills.
  • Dyslexia is one of a family of Specific Learning Difficulties. It often co-occurs with related conditions, such as dyspraxia, dyscalculia and attention deficit disorder.
  • On the plus side, dyslexic people often have strong visual, creative and problem solving skills and are prominent among entrepreneurs, inventors, architects, engineers and in the arts and entertainment world. Many famous and successful people are dyslexic.

Intentions Brief

Concept-Organic/synthetic/dyslexia

Over the summer, I was drawn to earthy colours in my surroundings, subconsciously choosing browns, greens and yellows in my clothes and makeup and I was attracted to the textures of trees, so I decided on the theme of Organic/ Synthetic. However, I intend to only use this theme as a starting point for the natural and synthetic materials I use such as woods, plastics and other materials. I will then research into my concept of Dyslexia; I am really interested in finding out more about my learning disability and expressing this concept through my work.

Specialist Area- Mixed media

I am going to specialise and investigate material manipulation and I wish to do this by using the laser cutter and the wood workshop and various other processes to create a body of samples. To create my designs I will use a variety of techniques with drawing medias, photography, Photoshop and Illustrator.

Context- Interiors

Over the summer, I have had an interest in interior settings. The idea of having a product/brand is an interest of mine and I intend to use my samples to create visualisations on how they would look on furniture, for example a chair, and then I will show this in an interior context.

Degree Show

Degree Show
Recently I visited the degree show and it really helped me to understand how different artists/designers present their work and how it looks all together. From visiting the degree show I realised that there is much more to the piece of work created for example a piece of clothing or a collection of fabric or even furniture. There is how you communicate that work across to the audience or the buyer. This might be through photography, Social media, Advertisement such a business cards and the overall image how does it look when presented all together.

All these little add ons make a big difference one could argue that it is not a add on and that they come as a package and help each other to create the final outcome. The degree show was a big learning curve for me instantly I was thinking of how they found their way of working and creating each look through each person’s work.  It is almost like an identity and I want to try and do that in the future try and find something I am passionate about which drives everything and which will make people think that work is from Lauren Hulme.

For example if my final products a print what am I doing with that? Am I showing it on the body or am I visualising it on furniture or just in imagery?

I think that is what I need to find out during this time off what is my context.

Unit X exhibition at federation house

Having our work shown within a space and seeing the public responding so positive was a real achievement. Below are images of the peice and the feedback from Twitter someone had left.
As a group we are really proud!
