Evaluation Intentions

During this intentions unit I have really developed a passion for working with a concept and most of all learning more about dyslexia and I think the way I have translated it across my samples has really come across over the past 8 weeks. Just thinking back in first year how much I use to over complicate my concept to now getting it across in a way where it might not even be visible what the context is has really made me proud. The fact that I gained so much new information and techniques from doing new workshops such as the wood workshop, Photography studio and creative suite studio it has really got me excited to progress this in the next unit. Loved working for a interior context. For the next project if I was to carry on with interiors I need to create more samples and developing more on the samples which work out. I also want to focus more on working with secondary students and combining my passion for interiors.
I want to investigate the vacuum former more and how I can progress this into different designs and how I can push this technique.
Like anything you get things which work and things which don’t. My Intentions for my ideas of embossing was consistent and in theory should of worked and I was prepared for creating the samples. However the materials gathered wasn't the right ones and unfortunately I didn't have time to try out more of a variety in materials and so for next time I would like to investigate this process more as I really liked making surface pattern.

Also during this unit I started of wanting to have a final image and that is really important to me however I didn’t get to do this as much as I would of liked to if I get a chance in the next project to expand on this then that would be really something to work with.

Below are 3 boards which best show my journey for this intentions Project.

Outreach Ambassador and Art Mentor

The past couple of week I have been having a very tight schedule. I have recently got the role of outreach ambassador which I am very proud off and excited to get involved. By being a outreach Ambassador it will allow me to get experience working with young pupils in primary and must importantly secondary. Gaining experience in presentation skills, working in schools, workshop training, Manchester higher programmes, primary events, Child protection training and also working with people with learning disabilities which I am even more excited to do.  I think this will give me a step closer to my dream job of being a teacher.
Also this year I have carried on working/volunteering for the arts mentoring programme which is based in the school of art. Already this year I have been to events like the GNCCF and many more.

With being a art mentor I get opportunities to do out of school projects, workshop leader, summer school, Saturday art club, London and edlab.
Recently I have been collaborating with edlab and working with a girl called Abbie Douglas from 3D design on working on a set brief to design arts award pack which will then be sent to over primary schools in greater Manchester.

Z Arts Collaboration

This has been really exciting to do and i have loved working with the staff and also having a deadline for this so close to my project deadline has meant me organising my time more.

Creative Suite Workshops

During the Creative suite workshops I have learnt lots more skills to help me with my work.
I have found it really fun and interesting learning how to use a mask, create brushes and to use different settings.
I have been enjoying applying my samples on to my context however Im not happy with the way it comes across as flat and very 2D print when what I want to go for is 3D printed texture.

Even though I did photography at college it has taught me unless you keep notes of everything you do you will forget how to do the technique and its been really fun learning to do everything again and I tend to keep practising and getting better.

Week 7 - Intentions

What has gone wrong this week?
This week hasn’t been the best. With the technique I had started to investigate with jess the materials wasn’t right for what I was trying to do and I belive with more time that I will be able to progress this on.

What's gone well this week?
After collaborating with hope I wanted to try out the photography studio and by doing this I got some really good shots of my samples and revealed qualities I wouldn’t of got if I didn’t use the studio.

Where to go next from this
I want to visualise my samples of work on furniture and also as panels on walls I also need to create a image pack and create a creative CV.
Also on walls

Make a image pack

Mini Workshop

Workshop-Responses to what's given at hand
With remainder laser of cuttings I wanted to do a little workshop activity with other peers in my group. I went and cut up the same sized wood in the wood workshop and place the cuttings in front of them and gave them 5 minutes to reflect on what was given to them and for each person to individually respond to what is in front of them.
When watching them I could see there faces showing confusion and not really understanding how to take it. That’s how I feel when I am set with a writing task or I have to read a book.
I really enjoyed practising workshop skills.
I asked for feedback from each individual;

·         Georgia - Creating order out of the random choice of pieces, z being out of place, juxtaposed to the many circles, empty circles like pins. Pressure in time-scale, calm-concentration on circles.
·         Bukky- I thought it was funny and fun making a face. It was fun making patterns with the pieces and the pieces were interested shapes and fun to put together. I got frustrated when flo and Georgia tried to ruin my man.
·         Flo- I enjoyed the experience as I was able to play around with pattern and seeing how the shapes interacted with each other and how the shapes gave it different dimensions
·         Steff: Lately I have gravitated towards the corner of a piece, which I realised I was doing again here. I think I'm doing it because I'm feeling very confused lately, and that's what the corner represents.

Myself I would of gone for the Z shape as that was a shape I found interesting and had the most to work with however when I asked why no one wanted to use it and went for the circle they said it looked weird and it was hard to work with. Very Complicated.

Giles Miller Studio

Today’s lecture I found inspiring.

His work captivated me the work Giles Miller Studio produces  is so sophisticated using physics and maths combined with creativity to transform a simple shape into a much complexed piece. I instantly wanted to know how they connected each induvial shape and how they create this tonal difference. They let things steer its self and this way it becomes more organic not having a final destination which I find a challenge to do (I should take this attitude).

They have done work for clients such as Stella McCartney, British Airways, Ritz-Carlton Hotels, Westfield, The World Architecture Festival, Bombay Sapphire Gin, Selfridges and many more from around the world especially Dubai.  It all started from cardboard and then it has progressed much more into different materials. Making complexed surfaces however, they still having (come back).

I asked a question about how they assemble the pieces together and they use panels in which then they drill each tile individually.By facing each tile at different angles (up,down) that then creates the tonal differences and this changes when at different points of the pieces. They also use hinges to join each tile to create this effect which I would like to explore in the future.

Collaborations

Collaboration with Hope Mccall.

I have recently collaborated with hope from digital print for fashion student.
We worked in the light photography studio on a look book shoot she is working on.

Below is a shot from the shoot.

From being a model for hopes shoot it has really inspired me to maybe take this ideas into my own work for future projects. Colour blocking was a really good idea and I like how hope did this to create backgrounds for the shoot. Also she used a marble material and I really liked the idea of a texture and marble as a texture.

With me wanting to do interiors I really think having someone using the furniture in a shoot so I would be able to visualize my work would be really beneficial and for me I think its important I also have a model in my shoot to complete the look.

However a down side of this would be that my surfaces will be hidden so would only show one or two with a model.

It was really fun working with hope

Collaboration with Jess Lampit

After Tutorial, jess and me decided to collaborate and work together on material manipulation and how we can use are laser templates to emboss materials into the design we want. We both took inspiration from Annie Claire's work who has just graduated from the School Of Art.We both was really interested in the idea she had and how it turned out.

When doing this we found it very frustrating with how it just wasn’t giving the impact we wanted and in some cases not even leaving a mark or just melting the materials used. We both had little successes and I would love to carry on investigating this technique in the next unit as I believe after much more trial and error it could be effective.

Week 6-Intentions

Today’s tutorial went really well still very happy with my concept and how well its pushing what I do and she and my peers like the fact I don’t have to stop with this concept it can be a ongoing concept which feeds all projects and I was really happy to hear this as I think I can push this concept even further. I need to Push materials and try different materials. So After the tutorial I had the idea of squeezing playdough through my wooden templates however in the end I did go with clay.

I now know why I never chose ceramics as a option and I pull my hat off to the craftsmen and woman who have cracked this skill.

Even though it didn’t go how I wanted it did bring out some great textures and was a good risk take.

I don’t think clay will be something I use again until I find a way to master it.

This week I have been doing sample development. I and Julie had a clear favorite.

I really love how when working back into this design how the plastic was melting and creating new shapes. Also because of the design being at different heights it was amazing how the moon text design got confused and jumbled up of the form and I really am proud of how much this links to my concept.

Where I want to go next is to take my wooden templates and work with jess on are collaboration in trying to create the embossing we said we would do. Now that we have bought are materials to do this I can start the process.

Week 5-Intentions

For this weeks tutorial I planned on getting all artist research documentation printed and shown on paper this has really helped to have in front of me and remember why I chose each artist it was brought up in tutorial that when I was showing these pages I skipped each mood board and didn’t expand on why I chose it and what I liked about them and after this I have gone back and wrote in my sketchbook the reasons why. I need to remember that whoever sees my work has no idea where ideas have come from and I need to show this. What I like from the artist Pablo lehmann Is that he has patterns within patterns and that they look like panels. Also the fact he is making small art based  furniture.

Also during this tutorial I and jess agreed on calibrating on working together to understand the idea of embossing and as I recently tried out the heat press with materials and using my wooden laser templates to do this. Image below shows the attempt with a yellow plastic material, I had this in the heat press for 6, 30 second slots and even though it is visible it isn’t has raised and visible as I imagined and when tried with the textured synthetic material it just started to burn.

After reflection I think that the material its self is far to thin and I need to be using much thicker material such as foam, sponge and other material with a thick property. So I look forward to working with jess.

Week 4- Intentions

What worked well?
Vacuum sample has worked really well the colour and final outcome has really impressed me and I really enjoyed this process and also like the texture left in the access material. Mark suggested that it reminds him of the braille text and that I could use it as a ground.
From this idea of the vacuum forming I wanted to see if I could do that with other materials I have tried it onto a copper sheeting and it wasn’t how I wanted it to look however when photographed it really provided some great textures and qualities I didn’t see from having the sample just at hand.

What didn’t work well?

I have all my references in my head and I need to collect the images and present them and start showing them within my blog.

Been a really un-motivated week found it really hard to get going

Where can I go next?

Try the heat press with materials I have already purchased and try and get the imprints of my lasers.

Carry on with the process I was doing with tiles and start getting some more research with them.

Work on top of vacuum forms laser cut into them.

Wood workshop

At the beginning of this project  i had to prove and show the staff in the wood workshop that I need the workshop to enhance my work and the way I see myself working. This has been a real struggle for me. At first I was told that there is no room and the 3d students have priority of the workshop and I got really down about this so I decided to prove my point and made a case up to show that even though I am a textiles student the ideas I have now and hopefully for the future wouldn’t be a waste of their time and I did this!

I am really proud that I didn’t give up on what I believed in.

So during the induction of the wood workshop I learned how the machines work and what each machine can do.

Types of equipment;

·         Band Saw

·         Thret Saw

·         Dust Extraction

·         Wadkin Bandsaw

·         Startrite 502E

·         Internal Sander

·         Disc Sander

·         Pilla Drill

·         Laze

·         Hot Wire (Foam,Plastic.)

·         Plastic Former

The piece of equipment which really got me excited and interested was the plastic former and instantly got me thinking how I could apply it to my work.

During my time using this facility I have started to become confident in using the saws to cut my own wood to use, using the drills and also the vacuum former. I have really enjoyed using this and am constantly thinking of new ways to adapt what I make and how I can develop using the laser cutter and former together to create new surfaces.

My confidence isn’t the biggest yet on the other machines and at the moment I am only doing basic things however I am constantly going in trying things out and trying to boost my confidence.

Moon and Braille

This week I have been working to find different types of text such as braille and moon text.

Then creating designs on illustrator with words that associate with me and how I feel about the unit. I have been writing words as the project has been going along.

·         Stress

·         Moving

·         Confidence

·         Dyslexia

With both texts being something that is raised, I think this will link with me wanting to create raised surfaces.

Week 3 -Intentions

What worked well?

·         My Concept has really come forward I am really enjoying expressing the theme dyslexia through material and my peers agreed and commented this.

·         Organic feel- geometric shapes – decoding words the comment was made that it reminds them of cryptic coding I really liked the idea of this and the fact of taking other difficulties into consideration.

·         Colours- , clothes/makeup

·         Good material choice plays with the eyes

·         Lazer cutting has gone really well
Confusion On to Synthetic Fabric

What didn’t work well?

·         Stay away from lace

·         Need to stop worrying about the blog tasks

Where can I go next?

·         Create grounds and surfaces with laser

·         Try embossing relief printing, heat printing embossing

·         Try dying and making my own fabrics
·       Try Get inducted in wood

Reflection On CV Talk

For the past couple of month I have really focused with trying to build up connections with the outside world and trying to get as much experience as possible. From my student ambassador job, working in Oldham gallery and even volunteering with MSA’s Saturday art club where I took a group of 14-16 year old to GNCCF. It was a really good way of helping others get the confidence to speak to fellow craftsman and also myself it really pushed me to ask them questions on how they got where they are and where they get there inspiration from.

Working With Saturday Club

I also feel with all the experience I am gaining from jobs for students, student ambassador and art mentoring and volunteering at the gallery its really helped me with where I see myself in the next 5 years and where I see myself after my degree and how much I want to teach and help others achieve the best possible it brings a real pleasure and enjoyment.

I have recently applied for the outreach ambassador job which i hopefully become successful in and that will gain me even more experience with working with young people its become a real passion of mine. After the lecture we had on cvs its really put into perspective what other oppertunites are out there which I never knew about and how I need to start thing of getting all this experience into my cv so I went and asked for a meeting with emploabilty hub and in that meeting a got a plan of action done which is shown below .

Week 2-Intentions

This week has been a week of fighting and having to prove what I want to do.

I have developed a real passion for working with wood, I know wood isn’t the most viewed textile material, however I want to prove and show it can be. I hope to bring the textile techniques I have learnt so far and apply them to wood. I know it will be a challenge and this was also brought up in tutorial. Over the holidays, I really enjoyed working with print after seeing the chair in Manchester Art Gallery.

Manchester Art Gallery

I would like to combine print techniques with wood which then I would see placed in an interior setting, for example furniture. I would also like the same print design, which I have applied to wood to be repeated on fabric. To pull the whole thing together and I visualise this on a piece of furniture. I really loved the idea Julie came up with of having more textile materials embedded into the wood and it being revealed through the designs in the wood.

It was also brought to my attention during my tutorial that I like to work to an outcome and that is something which is important to me. However, I believe this is going to become a problem, as I am already worrying about being experiential and just thinking of how everything will look I intend to work more freely.

I showed one of my designs I sketched and illustrated in illustrator ‘1 in 10 ’ and how I intend to work with this design. I do like how it still has the texture of wood look however I do want to try out using hole shapes.

Annabel Frearson

After a week of not knowing how to get my theme of dyslexia into my drawing work, I decided to take a trip to the Whitworth Art Gallery for more inspiration. It just so happened however that there was a talk happening from a woman called Annabel Frearson. I found the talk very confusing and it actually made me frustrated about how much I did not understand the vocabulary she was using during the talk. The academic vocab really put me off. However, I did take some information down and how she actually processes her ideas is interesting. The way she takes two books of interest, which may be talking about the same topic, or even completely different subjects it may just be the year they were made which draws her to them. She combines words together to make new words, in a way that is her little creation; she definitely thinks so. What did fascinate me was how she completely re-wrote the book of Frankenstein using Excel to make sure she wasn’t repeating any words and did not miss any. I loved the way she documented the amount of words. It looked like a database or a computer code. I really want to take this idea into drawings and then progress this into my illustrations.

Week One- Intentions

In today’s tutorial, I put forward my ideas on the more focused theme, which is dyslexia, and how I plan to link that with the theme Organic/Synthetic. I explained how I plan to work with wood and explore the different types of fabric I could experiment with. I also want to experiment more with wood and the laser cutter can provide the starting point, however with the option to use the wood workshop I can progress my designs into the context ‘interiors’ so hopefully I am aloud to use that workshop. After having my tutorial I still think I need to do more drawing work, as I do not have enough body of work to progress from and start creating samples. I also need to consider what my drawings will be of and how they will translate and connect to my themes. After doing more research on dyslexia I put forward one of my ideas for drawing, for example one half of the brain being translated through geometric and linear lines and the other half of the brain being translated through drawing more crazy and ‘a bit all over the place’.

What Is Dyslexia? (British Dyslexia Association)

  • The word 'dyslexia' comes from the Greek and means 'difficulty with words'.
  • It is a life long, usually genetic, inherited condition and affects around 10% of the population.
  • Dyslexia occurs in people of all races, backgrounds and abilities, and varies from person to person: no two people will have the same set of strengths and weaknesses.
  • Dyslexia occurs independently of intelligence.
  • Dyslexia is really about information processing: dyslexic people may have difficulty processing and remembering information they see and hear. This can affect learning and the acquisition of literacy skills.
  • Dyslexia is one of a family of Specific Learning Difficulties. It often co-occurs with related conditions, such as dyspraxia, dyscalculia and attention deficit disorder.
  • On the plus side, dyslexic people often have strong visual, creative and problem solving skills and are prominent among entrepreneurs, inventors, architects, engineers and in the arts and entertainment world. Many famous and successful people are dyslexic.
